Robot vacuum brand uses M8 waterproof charging connectors
A Shenzhen robot vacuum brand faced a design challenge during a product refresh: older models used exposed metal charging contacts that oxidized over time, preventing charging. Parents with young children also worried about exposed contacts being a safety hazard. The R&D team wanted to solve both problems in the next generation.
We recommended M8 3-pin waterproof connectors as the charging interface. Gold-plated contacts resist oxidation, IP67 sealing prevents moisture ingress, and the insulated housing eliminates exposed-contact safety concerns. The charging dock uses a panel-mount M8 receptacle, while the robot uses an M8 angled molded cable — alignment and insertion happen automatically when the robot docks.
The new solution was very well received across user reviews. Three subsequent models all used the M8 charging interface. While the connector approach costs more than bare contacts, the overall product quality perception improved, and users were happy to pay for it.
