A Guangzhou lighting factory replaced XLR with M12 A-code 5-pin for DMX512—waterproof and cheaper.
A Guangzhou stage lighting manufacturer produces LED wash lights and moving heads for outdoor events and large performances. They originally used XLR connectors for DMX512 control signals — XLR is not waterproof (rain caused short circuits at outdoor gigs), and the lack of a locking mechanism meant cables disconnected when stepped on or pulled.
We proposed M12 A-coded 5-pin connectors as the replacement. M12 features threaded locking that withstands stepping and pulling, IP67 water resistance for outdoor rain performances, and a compact form factor for dense panel layouts. Several Guangzhou lighting factories tested and confirmed the improvement.
After full conversion, signal dropout during outdoor events was virtually eliminated. The M12 connectors also cost slightly less than XLR — a rare case of better performance at lower cost. Now adopted as the standard by multiple Guangzhou lighting manufacturers.
